Community Spotlight: Supporting Our Hometown Heroes

As Veterans Day approaches this November 11th, we’re reminded that honoring those who served goes beyond a single day of recognition—it’s a year-round commitment that lives in the heart of our community.

At JDV Electric, giving back to the communities we serve isn’t just part of our mission, it’s woven into the fabric of who we are. This month, we had the privilege of supporting a local hero whose quiet dedication ensures that our veterans’ sacrifices are never forgotten.

Meeting a Guardian of Legacy

Our team recently connected with Bill Smeck, a U.S. Veteran and First Vice Commander of Springfield Post 227. Bill embodies the spirit of service that doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. Through his work with the American Legion, he’s taken on a mission that many never see but everyone benefits from: preserving the dignity and visibility of Springfield’s Hometown Hero signs.

These signs aren’t just metal and paint—they’re visual reminders of the sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers who answered the call to serve. They line our streets as testaments to sacrifice, bravery, and the community bonds that make Springfield strong.

The Work Behind the Honor

Each month, Bill walks through Springfield’s neighborhoods, inspecting every Hometown Hero sign. He checks that they’re hanging properly, securely mounted, and displayed with the respect our service members deserve. When weather damage or wear and tear threaten these tributes, Bill takes action.

This dedication moved us deeply. When Bill identified damaged mounting hardware that put several signs at risk, JDV Electric stepped forward to provide the funds needed for replacements. It was a small investment with profound meaning—ensuring these signs continue to hang securely and proudly throughout our community.
